Guided tour in English of the Navigli District
Single-use earphones if more than 10 people
The Canals district or Navigli, as known to the locals, is most famous for its unique urban vibe created by the bars flanking the water. The surrounding area is called the Porta Ticinese, thus named as it lay just outside the city’s mediaeval gate leading to the ancient city of Ticino or Pavia as it’s now called. A city that was defined by its waterways, Milan still has five of its mediaeval canals and there are two of them in this area along with the Darsena, once one of Italy’s largest inland ports and the point of arrival for the marble destined to build the Milan Duomo. Your tour will begin at one of Milan's oldest and basilicas, Saint Eustorgio, built on an ancient Pagan and early Christian burial site and steeped in legend. We’ll then stroll along the banks of the Darsena as your guide tells you the stories of ambitious architects, ruthless governors and Milan’s not so distant local crime scene. Milan has always been an ever-changing city and that’s probably one of the things that attracted Leonardo da Vinci here back in 1482. As we walk down the old towpath of the Naviglio Grande, we’ll be following in the footsteps of the Tuscan genius, who dedicated a great deal of his efforts to improving the Canals whilst in the service of the ruling family, the Sforzas. At the end of your tour you’ll have the chance of relaxing with a glass of wine (*) on the bank of the Canal at the best wine cellar of the Navigli.
* Not included in the tour price, to be paid for separately
